Spring is near, and as Mother Nature begins her task of refreshing and renewing the Earth, many of us begin to do the same to our homes. Cleaning out your closet, your garage, and pantry are good ways to make a start on reenergizing yourself. The best way to start is by getting organized and making sure you have the proper tools.

Cleaning Supplies

Before you clean, it is helpful to gather your cleaning supplies. Many people choose to wear a protective suit as well because you may be working with messy contaminants such as dirt, grease, and chemicals as you clear everything out. There are many useful and recyclable options available on the market, such as Tyvek suits that cover your entire body and can be reused again and again.

In addition to a protective suit, it is often useful to outfit a bucket with other cleaning supplies such as a sponge, scrubbing brush, a dust rag, a pair of protective gloves, large trash bags, and various cleaning solutions such as a glass cleaner, carpet spot remover, and disinfectant spray.

Organizational Containers

Before you start, it is helpful to get an idea of what your storage and organizational needs may be. Head to your local discount store and purchase some containers in a variety of sizes. If the storage area you are cleaning may be exposed to dust or dampness, make sure the containers you select are watertight. If the area you are organizing may be open to view on a regular basis, take the time to select a more whimsical or decorative container. There are several low cost and appropriate containers available.

Trash Or Treasure

Now it’s time to get down to the nitty-gritty. Get on your protective suit, rubber gloves, and your determination — and get to work! Choose the area you want to organize first and clean, focusing only on that area. Clear the items creating the clutter to a neutral area such as the patio or spare room. As you remove items, decide if they are trash or treasure. Put items you consider to be trash in your large trash bags right away and move on.

Place items you want to keep in the neutral area to be cleaned and sorted before they are put back in the target area. Be vigilant and keep on with this strategy until the target area is empty.

Clean Up

Before you head over to the neutral area to sort, make sure that your target area is spotless. Consider if the area can benefit from a fresh coat of paint along with an extreme cleaning. If the area you are organizing contains chemicals or grease, be careful and wear a protective suit with gloves to keep your skin and clothes protected.

Sort And Organize

Now’s the big moment, it’s time to sort and organize. Look at each item you are keeping and storing, cleaning and sorting into like piles. Take these piles and place them in your organizational containers. Label the outside of the containers so you know what you have and then place the containers back in your freshly cleaned storage area.

Keeping items in your home clean and well ordered takes some practice, but it’s simple with a protective suit to keep your clothes and skin safe and the right tools. With the right attitude, spring cleaning can become something you look forward to each year.
