Home Security-On the Cheap

by Jack Krohn
You may already know this. When times get tough like they are now with a recession, high unemployment and the mortgage mess causing a lot of foreclosed homes, crime goes up.

It seems every night that the top 2-3 stories are about home invasions, assaults, and burglaries in our town Colorado Springs. Even car jackings and rapes-all categories seem to be on the rise.

People get desperate and resort to crime to make ends meet or so the theory goes. Out in Las Vegas or any other once hot housing market foreclosures are horrific leaving hundreds if not thousands of homes empty and unprotected. Do you think the mortgage company is going to watch it? Guess again!

Just recently on ABC’s “Good Morning America” there was a story about making your home secure for less than $25. I am sure you can find the story online somewhere. Here’s the gist of how to make your home less attractive to the bad guys and more secure for you.

Nearly one of six homeowners will experience a burglary or worse a home invasion this year. So how do we stop this from happening and prevent home invasions? It seems obvious to me that you want to make your home an “uninviting” target.

By putting out the “UNWELCOME” mat you advertise to everyone this house is not going to be a pushover. “Mr. Burglar, you are in for a hard time if you pick on us.” Don’t make it easy.

If you think for one moment that being a burglar requires a lot of brains-think again. Burglars are opportunists-they respond and act on the laziness and stupidity of the homeowners. I don’t mean to sound cruel but let’s be honest-most burglaries are executed by taking advantage of homeowner mistakes.

Here’s some cheap ways to protect your home.

—Start with Neighborhood watch signs. www.usaonwatch.com Then have some signs that announce obstacles “beware of guard dog”, “these premises protected by” etc. And my favorite, an NRA stickers on your window or someplace conspicuous. You get the idea. Advertise that your home is not a good idea for burglary or home invasion.

—Signs for an Alarm Company. Burglars do their homework. When they break into a place it is usually with some degree of planning. If they see a sign in a yard that the property is protected by an alarm system-even if you don’t have one-they are much less likely to target the home.

—Some dummy surveillance cameras do wonders.

—Trim trees and bushes so there are no hiding places.

Believe it or not when someone is casing your neighborhood for the easiest homes to rob, some really stand out as being the easiest. Make sure it is not yours!
